[WI] 8 Ways To Build The Life That YOU Want With A Step-By-Step Life Plan

When you start planning, you have a great opportunity of being so much more successful in life. There is only one person that truly knows ‒ and understands ‒ what you want and how you intend to get it, and that is YOU.

You might already have your life plans all laid out… or not. Whichever way, these easy steps will move mountains to help you set up or fine-tune your Life Plan so that you can start moving forward and getting the joy and fulfillment out of life that you and your loved ones deserve.

Sit down and spend a few minutes to honestly answer the following questions about what it is that you really want. If all goes to plan (excuse the pun) you might have drawn up your detailed Life Plan before the end of the week!

  1. We all have dreams. What are yours? Don’t be shy – go big; allow yourself some “dream” time to spell it out – if only to yourself ‒ what it is that you truly desire. Be frank; go as over-the-top as you want. Importantly ‒ write it down.
  • Not even the sky is the limit when it comes to the number of dreams you have, or how big they may be. Life has more than enough opportunities for all of us to let go of or change some existing goals and add new dreams. Go wild and instill your personal Life Plan with each and every one of your dreams and goals and wants.
  1. Some things are more important and urgent than others, so what is important? Everything and anything you feel or think might be crucial to you or your life has to be part of your Life Plan. It may be anything ‒ learning how to go scuba diving, fly a plane or more education. Like many of us you might have wanted to travel the world, but simply never had the time or money to go for it. You might have grown up in a rented home, moving once every two or three years, so having your own home might be the single most important goal of your life. If it’s important to you, make it part of your list.
  1. What is it that you want to accomplish in life? What do you want to achieve? This is the opportunity to write it down and stipulate what you want to do and where you want to be in life. If you want a promotion, write it down. Or maybe you want to change jobs, move to a different town… whatever it is, put it on your list.
  • Write down what it is that you want to attain in your life on a personal, professional and educational level.
  1. What standard of living do you want? This will describe the life you want to lead ‒ where you want to live, do you want a house or an apartment or even a farm out in the country? You might even prefer to keep it simple and rather focus on doing other things ‒ living in a “lock up and go” so it’s easy to travel without having to spend time preparing for each and every trip.
  • We all want more, so perhaps you want to earn more money so that you can live in a large house, drive an expensive car, wear pricey clothes and travel all over. This simply means you are seeking the high life, so go for it!
  • Think about and investigate your desired standard of living and include it in your Life Plan. Search your soul. And remember, there are no “wrong answers” when you are working on your Life Plan.
  1. The word “fun” might have a different meaning for certain people, but make sure that you have fun. Are you having fun? To you having fun might mean locking yourself in your study to write novels or romances all day. Training for and competing in an event such as a triathlon might mean the time of your life to you. Less strenuous activities such as bowling, practicing yoga and traveling all over the also qualify – but make sure you do whatever brings you joy.
  • If your answer to this question is a “no,” it might be time to get serious about including fun in your life. You will need some time to sit down and deliberate about activities you know you will enjoy. When last did you kick up your heels? List activities that know you love to do. After all, what is life without having some fun?
  1. What do you do with your free time ‒ are you spending some time with friends and family? For most of us, those who are the happiest make time in their lives for family and friends. This should be is important to you, so make it part of your plan.
  1. Sharing or giving is said to be more rewarding than receiving, so what would you like to do for your community? Giving something back helps you to feel grateful for what you have and will give you not only gratitude, but also satisfaction and fulfillment in your own life. Donating money, time or energy for the good of others helps you generate positive feelings that can be the inherent result when you write them into your Life Plan.
  1. Do you invest in yourself? Is self-improvement high on your list? Trying to improve on yourself helps you to excel and keeps you moving toward your life goals. On your list also include short term achievements for as many areas of your life as possible.

Start working on your Life Plan as soon as possible – there is no better time than right now ‒ and feel free to change it as your wants and desires evolve. But get it done… Having a Life Plan keeps you focused on your goals and will serve as strong motivation to reach for the stars.

Dr. Hannes, I thank you very much for the article and its messages. You are now sounding more like Rev. Hannes Dreyer! My pick was mostly on “write your dreams down”. In the year 2001, I was wondering about in a jungle of a village called Makotopong in Polokwane, I had a little yellow book and was writing my wishes, one of my wishes was to become a Software Engineer but my burning point was that my mom was a farm worker and my father passed on while I was 14 years and that implied no one would pay for my dream path, however I managed to secure NSFAS loan and enrolled for BSc computer science the following year, I finished my studies and working for a couple of years as a software consultant. After reading your article, I am setting more business dream by simply writing down and researching ways to implement. Surely, I will notify you that writing these dreams and implementing them paid-off. God bless you for your inspirational writing and teaching. Jonas
